FREE FLOW DANCE CENTRE
2009 was an incredibly exciting year for us, with no small thanks to the renovation of an old church at 224 25th Street East into the Free Flow Dance Centre, the new home of Free Flow Dance Theatre! The Grand Opening Party of the centre took place on June 27th with performances by Free Flow Dance Theatre, Rosebud Burlesque Club and Suzanne Paschal and Tommy Dahl of Jump Me Martha! Heartfelt thanks go out to all the people who worked tirelessly renovating and cleaning the Free Flow Dance Centre; we could hardly believe how quickly it all came together.
W.I.P. NEW DANCE SERIES
The Works In Progress New Dance Series has had another successful year with unfinished works being presented on May 30th and September 26th by choreographers and dancers from across the country, including Neah Kalcounis, Erin Cowan, Kyle Syverson, Jaime Williams, Free Flow Dance Theatre, Deanna Peters, Tina Bertoncini and Jill Henis of mixOLOGY Dance Theatre! 2009 marked the 6th season of the W.I.P. New Dance Series, where the audience provides feedback to help the artists further their work! On December 5th, Erin Cowan, Kyle Syverson, Free Flow Dance Theatre and Jill Henis returned to present their finished work at the Works in Progress Gala. The Gala also welcomed guest artist Graham McKelvie from Toronto Dance Theatre, who presented two short solo works, including one of his original pieces, and work by choreographer David Earle. Thank you to all of our participants who made the W.I.P. possible!
Our annual Naughty Bingo fundraiser was a HUGE success! We would like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who came out to support us! A special thanks to our prize contributors: Lil' Devil Adult Toy and Video, Bodacious Bustlines, White Cat Books, Harlequin Industries, Rosebud Burlesque Club, Positive Passions, Broadway Theatre, For Lovers Only, 25th Street Theatre, The Refinery Arts and Spirit Centre, Persephone Theatre and The Flag Shop.
BACK ALLEY ANTICS
Back Alley Antics returned on June 20th for its third year, where site specific art performances happen along the back alley ways of Broadway! Performances were done by Free Flow Dance Theatre, Lia Pas, Eveline Boudreau, Kyle Syverson and Michael Bantjes. The sun was shining on us that day, and the crowd was bigger than its ever been!
MOVERS & SHAKERS
Free Flow Dance Theatre was honoured to be the host company for the very first Movers & Shakers Festival which took place from April 30th until May 2nd at The Refinery Arts & Spirit Centre. This three day festival was a celebration of Saskatchewan dance artists, with performances each night by dance artists of various styles and techniques. The festival also offered five dance workshops including Latin, Hip Hop, Modern, Contact Dance and Big Fat Ass Dance. A big thanks to The Refinery for providing a venue for this fantastic collaboration of dancers and choreographers.
The Free Flow Dance Theatre company retreat was held in Manitou Springs just outside of Watrous, SK on November 28th and 29th. The company dancers, artistic director and assistant spent the weekend discussing the previous year and planning for 2010 alongside of a dip or two in the healing hot mineral pool. A special thank you is extended to Adrian Stimson and Happy Grove for the use of their lovely cabin for our lunch meeting on Saturday afternoon!
One of the most exciting things that happened for Free Flow Dance Theatre in 2009 was the licensing of Danny Grossman’s work titled “Triptych.” The piece will be performed by the company in 2010, and Danny Grossman himself will be making a trip to Saskatoon!
On January 24th. Free Flow Dance Theatre performed to a sold out house as guest artists in North Battleford for a presentation titled “Swine Lake.”
In 2009, Free Flow Dance Theatre introduced two new fundraisers! The first, “Discomania”, took place at the Cosmo Senior Centre on April 17th, complete with a free hustle lesson! The second, “Black Light Party”, took place at Free Flow Dance Centre on November 7th!
Free Flow Dance Theatre received a city grant which funded us to hold free dance workshops for other non-profit companies. Two workshops were completed in 2009 in collaboration with a woman’s shelter and a youth centre.
Thanks again to our membership, as well as the artists, choreographers and volunteers who made this past year a success! A special thanks to the Saskatchewan Arts Board for funding us with the Global Annual Arts Funding Grant!
