2013 Annual General Report
Artistic Director: Jackie Latendresse
March was a busy month for dance with back to back performances of Danny Grossman’s Triptych at Dance Saskatchewan on the 9th and at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina on the 10th. April was equally as busy with a double performance on April 28th for International Dance Day. We presented a remount of Bob Fosse’s Mein Herr at both the Free Flow Dance Centre and the Dance Saskatchewan Centre. Back Alley Antics took place July 13th. It was located for the first time in Caswell Hill. Free Flow performed Viewpoint and many other local artists such as Ryan Bradshaw and KSAMB Dance were featured.
On August 8th the Mendel Art Gallery hosted “The Spontaneous Dancer”. Free Flow as their featured guest artists, presented Triptych by Danny Grossman and Latendresse’s Make Your Mark, Sleeper’s Wood (a dance piece to the poem by Ryan Bradshaw) and Seasons, a new work with costumes designed by patrons of the Mendel on August 1st. The event was inspired by the Automatists exhibit being featured in the gallery.
Parking Day, September 20th, was a new event in Saskatoon where parking stalls were reclaimed for art, life and relaxation. Free Flow performed The French Maids as a part of this community initiative. Our friends Jessie Garon from Montreal and Newton Moraes from Toronto held special dance workshops at Free Flow. On June 30th Jessie hosted a workshop featuring Improvisational Dance Techniques and Newton shared with us his ever popular Brazilian dance workshop on September 29th.
W.I.P. NEW DANCE SERIES
The Works in Progress series 2013 presented showings in June and September with the W.I.P Gala in December. Participants included: Rae Ann Hydamaka, Jessie Garon, Ntara Curry, Newton Moraes, Nicole Pemberton, KSAMB and Free Flow. Mentors for the events were: Tom Bentley-Fisher and Frank Engel. The W.I.P. Gala presented completed works at the Refinery Theatre (on the coldest day of the winter – complete with Blizzard!) by Free Flow, Jessie Garon and KSAMB.
Dr. Sketchys’ Anti-Art School events continue to be well-attended and popular events for Free Flow. The themed events are a clever draw and include models and performances by Free Flow and the Rosebud Burlesque Club. Dr. Sketchy provided six fundraising events this year including a karaoke style night with Free Flow performing Bob Fosse’s Mein Herr at Diva’s Night Club.
We also hosted our highly successful annual Naughty Bingo, a Pin-up Hair Workshop and a Zombie Makeup Workshop. All workshops were well attended. Thank you to Rona Sumners and Caryn Dietrich for teaching the fund raising workshops for us this year! Because of the popularity of our annual Naughty Bingo we added a second sister bingo event called the Clean Bingo. Prizes included items to get you and your environment clean. We believe the event will grow to be as popular as the Naughty Bingo and will host it again in 2014.
Free Flow had the opportunity to teach many free dance workshops in 2013 to other non-profit and community organizations in Saskatoon. This year’s participants included: Central Haven Care Home, Oliver Lodge, Stensrud Lodge, Lighthouse Supported Living, Sherbrooke Community Centre, Luther Care Home, International Women of Saskatoon, Camp Fyrefly, Young at Heart, and the Saskatoon Convalescent Home.
As always the company retreat was revitalizing and helpful. Many ideas regarding the future of the company were discussed but the most important topic of note was the list of potential new sponsors generated by the dancers. This was beneficial as the Fundraising Committee has been focussing on developing a new long term funding strategy and the dancers’ input was valuable to ascertain the companies and values they would like to represent.
Free Flow Dance Theatre Company is applying for charitable status in 2014. As a result, the board has been developing a new Strategic Plan and Bylaws. Much of the work has been completed and both the Strategic Plan and Bylaws have now been approved. Thank you to our Board of Directors for everything you’ve done to grow and prepare the company for new and financially stable adventures.
Thank you to our membership, as well as the artists, choreographers and volunteers who made this past year a success! A special thanks to our funders for 2013. Without your support we could not have offered these fantastic programs!
