2014 ANNUAL GENERAL REPORT
Artistic Director: Jackie Latendresse
W.I.P. DANCE SERIES
The Works in Progress series 2014 presented a single showing in June of work by Jackie Latendresse, Kyle Syverson, Erica Jacks and Deanna Peters. The participants were invited to present finished works at the special fall concert Motion Influx in November. The Mentor for the events was Graham McKelvie.
Free Flow was invited to showcase their collaborative work Season’s set to the live poetry of Ryan Bradshaw at both the Meewasin Valley Centre and the Saskatoon Farmer’s market as a part of Jane’s walk. It was wonderful to collaborate with such a talented writer. The company also performed as special guests at The Saskatoon Salsa Birthday Event, The Potash Corps Fireworks festival and at Dance on the Saskatchewan, hosted at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan riverside tents by Dance Sask Inc. The company presented their newest exciting work “Pods” which featured a trio of exotic looking “dancer-plants” which grew from stretchy sacks. Inside each sack was also a mini trampoline.
Dr. Sketchys’ Anti-Art School events continue to be well-attended and popular events for Free Flow. The themed events are a clever draw and include models and performances by Free Flow and the Rosebud Burlesque Club. Dr. Sketchy provided several fundraising events this year. We also hosted our highly successful annual Naughty Bingo, The Somewhat Clean Bingo, a Stage Make-up Workshop and a Boudoir Photo Shoot workshop. All workshops were very well attended. Thank you to Jackie Latendresse for teaching the Stage Makeup workshop and to Ken Greenhorn Photography for the photo workshop! The 2nd Feed the Dancers Indiegogo Campaign was held in 2014. We would like to thank all of the people who funded our campaign and we hope you enjoyed your perks!
We began a new fund raising initiative in 2014 called the refundable bottle and can drive and it was a success! Many of our board, staff, performers and supporters donated their recyclables! The entire shed was filled to the rafters! We intend to carry on with this initiative in 2015.
Free Flow had the opportunity to teach 15 free dance workshops in 2014 to other non-profit and community organizations in Saskatoon. This year’s participants included: Central Haven Care Home, Oliver Lodge, Stensrud Lodge, Sherbrooke Community Centre, Luther Care Home, International Women of Saskatoon, TWEENS on Guard, Global Gathering Place, Avenue Community Centre, Open Door Society, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Radius, Canadian Paraplegic association, and Community Living Association Saskatoon. This program is funded by the City of Saskatoon, Affinity Credit Union and Sasktel.
INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY
Free Flow was pleased to present Make Your Mark at our multicultural showcase of dance at the Free Flow Dance Centre to a packed house! We were able to offer this event free of charge to the public thanks to additional funding from Sask Culture and Saskatchewan Arts Board! We also presented “Postcards” by Graham McKelvie at the International Dance Day Celebration at the Dance Saskatchewan Centre.
BACK ALLEY ANTICS, NUIT BLANCHE & MOTION INFLUX
Back Alley Antics joined forces with the AKA Gallery’s Street Meet in 2014. The event took place along the back alley ways of Riversdale and featured many local performing artists including spoken word, and dance! Free Flow was thrilled to be selected to participate in the first ever Saskatoon Nuit Blanche all night, out door, contemporary arts festival. We presented Pods to a very busy and engaged street audience.
Our fall concert, Motion Influx, took place at the Refinery Theatre on November 29th. The weather held out for us and although it was cold the theatre felt warm with so many in attendance. We featured two works by Jackie Latendresse including “Pods” and Movement Interruptus in C(ell) Minor a new audience participatory 25 minute work inspired by and involving live cell phone technology. A big shout out goes to Tony Arkles for making this project possible! We simply could not have done it without his expertise in the technology area! Thanks to our guest artists Kyle Syverson and Erica Jacks for also presenting works from the W.I.P. New Dance Series.
Our Strategic Plan, Bylaws and policies have now been approved. Thank you to our Board of Directors for everything you’ve done to grow and prepare the company for new and financially stable adventures. Thank you to out-going Board members Jack Latendresse and Meaghan Williams for their service to our organization! You will be missed!
Thank you to our membership, as well as the many artists, choreographers and our beloved volunteers who made this past year a success A special thanks to our funders for 2014. Without your financial support we could not have offered these fantastic programs!
