April 2005 Update
Free Flow Dance Theatre
April is a busy month as it is the month that we celebrate International Dance Day. It falls on Friday April 29th this year and we will be celebrating it by taking part in two different performances in Saskatoon.
International Dance Day
International Dance Day Celebration - DSI Centre 205A Pacific Ave.
Please join us and thousands of other people around the world on International Dance Day, Friday April 29th, and celebrate dance in its myriad of forms! Free Flow Dance Theatre presents: International Dance Day Celebration 2005. The doors open at 7:00pm and tickets will be available for only $3.00 per person. There is limited seating so please come early! This production has been sold out for the past two years and promises to be popular again this year. Proceeds go towards the Free Flow Dance Theatre Company Fringe Festival Production.
This years dance groups include: Saskatchewan Express Musical Theatre, Saskatoon Highland Dancing Association, Pure Energy Dance, Harris Dance Club, Def Sol, Espiritu Mediterraneo, Saskatchewan Contemporary Ballet, Danza Moreno, Scottish Country Dancers, Tina Bertoncini Dance and Free Flow Dance Theatre.
The performance will take place in the Dance Saskatchewan Centre at 205A Pacific Ave and is a terrific way for people to get a little taste of many of the dance forms that are available in this city. From Traditional to Contemporary styles, there will be something in the show for everyone! Come Celebrate Dance with us. We hope to see you there!
Free Flow’s latest production Dreamscape was a huge success at this years Her-icane Festival of Women’s art in Saskatoon in March. All three showings were very well attended and we received many positive comments from audience members. I would like to extend a special thank you to Kathy Bond and Saskatoon Pilates Centre, Shirley Kloeble, Alan Page, Shelly and Bob at 25th Street Theatre, D.S.I. Centre, Chad Smith and Mark Eriksson for their support! I would also like to congratulate the dancers on a great run of shows! Performers included Karla Kloeble, Kyle Syverson, Chis Senuik, Kelly Van Damme, Allison Knight and Damian Bartlett.
Art Bra Auction
Free Flow also took part in the Her-icane Go Diva Festival fundraiser Art Bra Auction to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. The dancers participated by not only performing a short fun little dance incorporating Bras but by also modelling/showcasing the art bras for auction. The fundraiser was a terrific success for the cause as well as a lot of fun!
Please note that I have moved into a larger apartment and now have a new address. The new address is: Jackie Latendresse Apartment 2B 305 26th St. E. Saskatoon, SK, S7K 0L9. I held a Hollywood Housewarming Party on April 9th to break the place in and a great time was had by all. It also was a night of interesting drinks (I invented a new one called the Green Apple Faerie, and also was making Watermelon Cosmos). There may be a few party pics up soon so keep your eyes open for those.
The Vaudeville project – creation level has been ongoing over the past three months. We are currently wrapping up the last bits and working on filming some of the base results for the grant follow up. Plans are in the works for a third grant application for production of the Vaudeville show next year. We hope to produce and open the show for the City of Saskatoon Centennial year.
Currently the following people are involved in the project: Dancers – Karla Kloeble, Kyle Syverson, Kelly Van Damme, Amber McGrath and Frank Engeln Costume design and prototypes - Arijanna Bacalo, Prop and set design - Mark Eriksson, Musicians – Suzanne Paschall, Tom Dahl, Jessi More, Corpusse, Orion Paradis and Lou Latendresse, Script and acting coaching – John Huston. Also on board is Kathleen Oudit as marketing and promotions designer. We are looking for sponsorship for this project as we plan to tour it extensively once it is up and running. We need support in many ways including cash donations. The costumes, set and props are very expensive to produce and the cast will eventually include approximately 20 people plus special guests. As you can see this is the largest scale event that Free Flow Dance Theatre has ever initiated! If you are interested in supporting the production of the show please do! We will be launching a full scale fundraising effort this fall! Mail all donation checks to: Jackie Latendresse 2B 305 26th St. E. Saskatoon SK S7K 0L9
Dances have been inspired by Maud Allen’s Salome, Drag acts, Sally Rand’s burlesque, Josephine Baker, Precision High Kick Acts, Loie Fuller’s Skirt Dances, the infamous Barrison Sisters and Siamese twins. It is a fantasic tongue in cheek show that fuses the past with the present!
Saskatoon Fringe Theatre Festival
Dreamscape will be showing at the Saskatoon Fringe theatre Festival from August 4th to 14th. Details are yet to be released but keep your eyes peeled for this hot show! The show includes: “to dream…” a hauntingly beautiful work that remains on the periphery of your thoughts like the notes of a music box long after it has wound down. This work was developed collaboratively with the company members and looks at the many ways that one person deals with loss, greif and recovery. The second new work is titled “Navras” (a Hindu word which, when broken down, means nine emotional states that are exhibited during music, dance, drama, and the visual arts, the experience of which brings about a state of transcendental bliss). It is a blend of high energy athletic dance and controlled slowness which will take the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster ride. Works from the company repertoire include: “Half Naked” – a humorous duet with a sleeping bag, “Same Time” – an interpretation of a Laurie Anderson Tale and “a small piece of sky” – a blindfolded group performance inspired by women’s struggles. Also in the works is a NEW piece which is inspired by Nightmares!
Dreamscape, an evening of original short contemporary dance works is designed to be entertaining for fans of both dance and live theatre alike. Free Flow Dance Theatre is breaking ground in the ever growing dance scene here in Saskatoon and is not to be missed! For more information on the company and it’s members please see our website at www.freeflowdance.com.
As usual there are plans being laid for various other smaller projects and teaching gigs. The Project with North Park Wilson School is progressing along well and I am working with every grade in the school from K to 8 this year. They will have an upcoming performance on May 6th at the school at both 9:30am and 1pm.
I will leave the update for now or yet again it will become too long to read. I hope to hear from you all on International Dance Day. Send a card or an email or note to your dance friends celebrating dance and its importance to the global community!
