Hello and welcome to another Free Flow Dance Update!
It has been a while since last I wrote but it has been a busy summer for me.
I spent ten days in June up in Northern Saskatchewan in La Ronge working with my friend Jessie on Youth Out Loud Summer Arts Camp. It was a last minute project that came through with great success! We had over 40 kids ranging from Kindergarten to high school and taught classes including, creative dance, musical theatre, spoken word and movement, clown, mask, drama and we even put together everyone to create a "Stomp like" performance piece. The 10 days were long but fulfilling and the performance that capped off the week was very impressive. Both Jes and I had a great deal of fun as well!
As many of you know I was in Ontario for a month for a holiday of sorts. I think I managed to pack in a years worth of fun in a very short time. I took in some fringe shows, made it to Daf and Jim’s annual BBQ party (wow I hadn’t been to Waterloo in many a year!), went to my sisters place for her BBQ party, spent a week with family and at the new and improved version of my parents log home (which never ceases to amaze me!) and inbetween managed to visit most of you back home.
The Cocktail party was a small but fun affair and I somehow managed to make it through the day with trying all of them! (and not falling down!) Thanks go out to Alan Page for letting us use his lovely garden to host the party in! More thanks go to Daf and Jim Summers for helping with the raffle and of course the GIANT Carrot cake, not to mention their continuing financial support for Free Flow.
While I was in TO I was happy to stay with Kathleen Oudit, Holly Treddenick and Mo Moore at some point, so I would like to say thanks to all of them for opening their homes and for being such great friends!!! If you are ever out my way please come stay with me.
Since I have been back in the "Toon, I have been very busy! I got a job working as a venue technician at the fringe here and was running lights and sound for 5 groups, along with helping to build stages and hang lights and the like. I was lucky enough to have some great shows in my venue (which is good as I had to see them 5X) Bill and Gill from the UK (friends of mine from previous fringe tours) were among my theatre companies and were great to work with.
I am starting a terrific new job this fall as a sessional teacher at the University of Saskatchewan. I will be teaching the dance lecture componant of a course offered to students who are taking the B ED degree requirements. I have started writing my lectures this week and am very excited to get started! (God knows I can talk about dance all day! Finally a job just right for me!!!) I will be working there from Sept. to April.
I am also teaching dance classes of course. I will be running 2 of my own modern classes and will teach at Studio One for my friend Tammy as well. On top of this all The Gala performance for the W.I.P. New dance series is rapidly approaching. It is to take place on Sat. Sept. 27th at the Refinery Arts and Spirit Centre in Saskatoon at 8pm. I am still looking for volunteers and sponsors for this event so if you are interested please contact me as soon as possible!
Well this update is getting quite long so I will end it here. I hope that you all had a fabulous and fun filled summer! Keep in touch. I love to hear what is going on at your end! For those of you who are wondering…..yes the rumours are out…… there will be a BIG NEW YEARS PARTY in Toronto!!! The theme is going to be a speakeasy ! Details will be announced….. Flapper girls are needed to perform the Charleston so keep that in mind!
