Free Flow Jan 2004 Newsletter

Well I hope that everyone had a terrific holiday season and that the New Year brings endless opportunities for you all! I had a very busy but enjoyable vacation in Ontario. I managed to spend time with almost everyone I know and still managed to get out to my sister’s place for her violin and piano concerts and to my parent’s lovely cabin for three days over Christmas.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kathleen, Mo and Holly for letting me couch surf (yet again) during my stay in Toronto. It was great seeing you all again!

PAST EVENTS

New Year Flapper Style
The annual Free Flow Dance Theatre New Year party was a flapping great success! The theme was a 1920’s Speak easy and almost everyone came dressed for the time period. Thanks to Mo, Naomi and Robbie for tending the bar, to Lou for her fabulous piano playing and generally doing anything that needed to be done, to Daf and Jim Summer for generously helping to stock the bar, to John, Pete, Bill and Paul for helping with door duties and to Paul for the use of his piano.

The show went over very well and featured performers including crowd fav Ari Bacalo (also my costume designer – did my fabulous flapper dress), Returning was Dave Strutt with Razzle Dazzle and Mo Moore with Mr. Cellophane. Flappers and Murderesses included Daf Summers, Kathleen Oudit (despite ending up at emergency with an asthma attack later on) Holly Treddenick (of Free Flow fame) along with Myself, Robin Pittis, Linda Moss, Ana and Emily. Congrats to all of you on a terrific performance!

Highlights of the performance include singer songwriter Jessi Brown (my friend from Saskatoon), The dynamic and dazzling Charleston, The Laurel and Hardy Burlesque show and the Startlingly sexy Cell Block Tango. A surprise act featured Robin Pittis (quite convincingly in drag) reciting a very fun poem about a 1920’s prostitute.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this party a huge success! I look forward to next year’s party. (Rumor has it that it just might be a sock hop – greasers and poodle skirts all the way!)

CURRENT EVENTS

Back to school
Yep I am back to school. I am teaching the dance component of the Fine Arts 100 course at the University of Saskatchewan until April. The first semester went very well and I am enjoying giving the lecture course immensely (although I manage to put in a few workshops when I can)

Classes
My new session of Modern dance classes for adults begins on Jan 12th. The classes run Monday nights from 8:30-9:45pm and the cost is $60.00 for 6 classes. The classes are being offered at 205A Pacific Ave. The D.S.I. Center

Grants
I am happy to announce that I have received funding for the 2nd year in a row from Dance Saskatchewan to continue to run the W.I.P. New Dance Series. The first presentation of choreographer’s works in progress will be at the end of March Dates are to be announced. If you are interested in applying to showcase your work please consult the web site under the W.I.P. logo on the home page.

I am also very pleased to say that I have received funding from the Sask Arts Board to do three months of research on dance styles of the Vaudeville and Follies genre. This project will be beginning in April. It is the first tier of a three-tier project, which will include creation and production in the later tiers. I am extremely excited about delving into the history of these entertaining and fun and yes, sometimes bizarre dance forms. If you have any books or information for me please don’t hesitate to send it on to me!

Performances
I am holding auditions on January 18th for the upcoming performance I am producing for the Saskatoon Hericane Fiona Festival of women’s arts this upcoming March. I will keep you informed on how the show is progressing. I plan to remount the very humorous piece “Laughing” for this show along with several new works.

I am applying for the Saskatoon Fringe Festival this year! I will be co-producing a show with local choreographer Tina Bertoncini (as long as we get chosen in the lottery!) The festival runs during the beginning of August in Saskatoon.

Well this update should find an end soon……
I encourage you to check the web site for new photos from the New Year Party and if you have any you would like to share with me be sure to send them to me!
I wish you all the best in the New Year and hope that you all keep dancing across the Universe!
Love Jackie
