Free Flow Dance Theatre Update Sept. 2004

Hello once again!
It is fall again and of course one of the busiest times for me as usual, but then again when isn’t it? I had an excellent summer full of adventure and am ready to get down to dance business once more.

Summer Fun

As you have probably heard our co-production Triptych with Tina Bertoncini went very well. We got a four star review in the Planet S Magazine and a three star in the Star Phoenix. Ticket sales were good and the performances were well done. Congratulations to everyone involved! I also worked as a venue technician at the Off Broadway Venue and still managed to see quite a few shows on top of that. It was really nice to see some of my old friends from the fringe circuit and to catch up with their lives.

Next I was off on my grand vacation … First stop was Calgary where I hooked up with my old Uni buddy Steveo and his wife Nicola. It was their little boys 1st birthday and man is he a cutie!!! A fun time was had by all and I managed to make it to the bus to time (way too early in the morning…) Thanks guys for spoiling me as usual!

I was off to Pincher Creek after a few bus delays and hooked up with a ride into Waterton Park. I met a nice man from Australia on the bus and he grabbed a ride in with us. I spent a wonderful week in the park with Justin and his work crew. I managed to do a little hiking despite too much rain and fairly chilly weather. It was great to hang with Justin and to take a little down time for myself. Karaoke at the Thirsty Bear was fun amidst the Toga clad lodge staff that seem to be going a little crazy from the isolation….

My ride to Burning Man, Peter an herbalist from Calgary, arrived to pick me up for the drive down to Nevada. Four young women joined us for the ride down there. Driving through the park and various landscapes was an event all in itself and despite some mild cases of car sickness it went very well. We camped in a terrific place in Montana our second night (for dirt cheap) and the camp had a hot springs on the property…. Which took a little hunting for but was ultimately worth while.

Upon arriving in Black Rock City for Burning Man I actually managed to find my camp in the dark in the huge area that was soon to transform itself into a city of strange and wonderful events and people. What can I say about Burning Man itself. I think the best way to describe it is: all of the wild and fun things I have ever done in my life all rolled into one place times 1000.

Here are a few of the highlights as it would be impossible to write them all down without turning this update into a novel. Arts and crafts day – including Ceramics, mural painting, pastie making, jumbo pickle eating, Monkey Chanting, snow cones (complete with a ticket from the Karma police – good karma of course– Naomi and I were sharing and taking too long to decide what flavour) and picnicking on Nature Burgers. Camp day with my gang serving Margaritas (Merry Margarets) alongside of Irish drinking songs to anyone and everyone who passed by our camp. Indian food night prep with the girls… spicy but good! Can’t believe we made 3 kinds of curry and rice etc all on 2 camp stoves!

Karaoke in the desert with Brian (quite a challenge), Afternoon foot baths in the women’s temple, watching the fights at Thunderdome… yes THUNDERDOME!!! It was so cool!, Dancing like a maniac in front of a screen which filmed you as you danced and transformed your body into various computer graphics… I NEED ONE OF THESE! Eating popcorn with lemon pepper and taco seasoning at the Corn camp! Biking the out skirts of the city in the middle of the night and far out onto the Playa to see some art pieces.

Watching various things blow up and shoot flames into the air. Witnessing the burn of the Man while trying to avoid the throng of 30,000 people, staying up for sunrise over the temple with Naomi in a couple of lawn chairs we found at an installation that was showing films of the galaxy. The temple burn with our camp gang and the walk over together. Losing my bike and panicking for half hour, finding it and feeling soooo much better! Having a bike in a place that large is really a godsend!

Sleeping in the Temple Virgins chill out space, meeting various freaky lovely people and giving them the magnets I made, the fact that it was a commerce free event was amazing! It really is hard to believe that it actually can work! Spikes Vampire Bar, the Lost Penguin and the pizza delivery service that throws darts at the map and delivers wherever they land. Bartering at the Post office to send postcards and working the door at the Irish pub with Brian making sure that no one had any ID!

Ok I have to stop here as I knew it would get too long. I really want to say thanks to Brian for my ticket and to everyone in the camp for being so awesome!

What’s on the go?

I have started teaching my course at the U of S and it is going well. My Modern Classes begin on Sept. 14th at the DSI Centre the time is 8:30-9:45pm and I still have more space for students to enroll. There are some rumors of a workshop job for me coming up that I hope come through.

The Gala performance of the W.I.P. takes place on Oct 22-23 at the Refinery Arts and Spirit Centre at 609 Dufferin Saskatoon. The shows are at 8:00pm and tickets are $12 students $14 adults. I hope to see you there if you are in town. I will be presenting my new piece System Override along with several other choreographers finished works.

I am in the thick of grant applications for both Dance Saskatchewan and Sask arts board so wish me luck on those projects. I hope to get enough funding to complete the second tier of the Vaudeville/Follies project this winter.

Upcoming stuff

I am pleased as punch to announce that Free Flow Dance Theatre is turning 10 years old! Yes 10! Many of you have been around since the first showings in 1994 and I want to take this time to say thanks for all your support and help over the years! I couldn’t have made it this far without you!

I will be returning to Toronto for a month over Christmas and would like to throw a party for New Years again. It will be a combination Birthday Party for Free Flow and the theme will be Hollywood/Bollywood. Take your pick… Does anyone have a red carpet I could roll out? I am hoping that there will be guest appearances from some of the past members of the company so if you are reading this and thinking “Hey that’s me!” Please let me know if you want to perform! I will send out more details about the event as things are confirmed. If you would like to volunteer to help out that would be cool! Just drop me a note and let me know what you would like to do.

Well that is my update for now. I look forward to hearing from you all soon. Remember to keep dancing across the Universe!
Love Jackie
