Art in Motion: From the Gallery to the Alley
In 2013, Free Flow Dance Theatre celebrated the deep connection between contemporary dance and contemporary art with The Spontaneous Dancer, a special event held in partnership with the Mendel Art Gallery (now Remai Modern). Set against the backdrop of the Automatiste exhibit, dancers embodied the energy of the seasons in costumes created by gallery participants, moving alongside poetry by Ryan Bradshaw, the powerful Triptych by Danny Grossman, and Make Your Mark by Jackie Latendresse. It was a night where visual art, movement, and community creativity collided in beautiful, unexpected ways.
That same spirit of collaboration and site-specific performance lives on today in Back Alley Antics—Free Flow’s long-running summer series that transforms Saskatoon’s alleys into pop-up stages for dance and performance art. Originally launched in 2005, this vibrant outdoor event continues to surprise and delight with new works each season.
